InsurTech Startups We Love & Insurance Conferences We Are Attending This Year

InsurTech is another integral part of the global FinTech revolution to bring more innovation to the financial sector in general. As the name suggests, InsurTech startups focus their attention on revitalization of the insurance sector. It goes without saying this segment of the FinTech revolution has attracted a lot of entrepreneurs and investors as well. There are over 1,000 insurance startups in the world today. Following three startups caught our attention lately.


Trōv is the world’s first on-demand insurance for your things. With a simple swipe on your phone, you can easily protect just the things you want, exactly when you want, entirely from your phone. You can also easily organise important information about the things you own and back it up to the cloud, so it’s accessible when needed. Since 2012, Trōv has conceived an absolutely , innovative type of insurance policy, addressed in particular to millennials: on-demand policies to protect personal properties (computers, smartphones, TVs, bicycles, musical instruments, sports equipment, cameras, etc.) even for a short time.

Trōv is now available in Australia and the UK and launching in the US this year. Trov is as well looking to expand into Europe, Asia, and South Africa, and into the Japanese market.

In 2017, HSB Ventures Inc, the venture capital subsidiary of German reinsurer Munich Re, has led a $45 million investment in Trōv. Altogether Trōv managed to secure $87 million in funding.

Swipe to protect things you love against damage, loss or theft


Lemonade is a licensed insurance carrier that offers homeowners and renters insurance powered by artificial intelligence and behavioral economics. By replacing brokers and bureaucracy with bots and machine learning, Lemonade promises zero paperwork and instant everything. And as a Certified B-Corp, where underwriting profits go to nonprofits, Lemonade is remaking insurance as a social good, rather than a necessary evil. Since 2016 when the company began offering homeowners and renters insurance in New York, they are rolling out renters and home insurance in eight states in the United States.

In the end of 2017, Lemonade announced a $120 million Series C funding round led by the SoftBank Group and currently has funding $180 million.

According to its co-fouder and CEO Daniel Schreiber, Lemonade reached around 90,000 customers this year.

How lemonade claims work


Metromile is a San Francisco-based startup revolutionizing car insurance through technology with its pay-per-mile insurance model. By offering affordable car insurance, transparent pricing based on the miles you actually drive, data to optimize how you use your car, and instant access to detailed vehicle diagnostics via the driving app, Metromile is transforming car insurance to be more intelligent, seamless, and accessible than ever before.

According to CEO Dan Preson, Metromile has raised $205 million. As notable as the size of Metromile´s funding is the list of investors behind it. They include a couple of insurance giants as Canada´s Intact Financial and China Pacific Insurance.

In year 2017 their customers hit the billion mile marker.
